Chapter 9 excerpt

Marcus has a complicated relationship with his family, there is never any doubt about that throughout the story.  He and his older brother Geoffrey play nice when Marcus first returns to Ten Points.  Although funeral homes and churches do exist, their father Maximilian Lanehart’s body lies in state in the Ten Points foyer.  Guests have left after the wake, and the house is empty.  Things finally turn ugly between the brothers when Geoffrey catches Marcus lifting the lid of the closed casket for a final look at Maximilian.  An argument ensues when Geoffrey reprimands Marcus about overstepping boundaries.  Marcus then starts asking pointed questions about family attorney James Ruffin, III and Maximilian’s final wishes as Geoffrey attempts to leave the house for a while.
